Gran Fenwick is the Toronto indie rock project created by songwriter, broadcaster, and music historian Ian Strung. It isn't a fixed band — it's Ian at the center with a rotating lineup of vocalists and musicians pulled directly from the independent scene around him.
The whole thing works like an open door: different artists step in, bring their voice, and help shape each release into something that reflects the wider community rather than one static lineup.
The project grew out of Ian's radio work on “Cancon Classics,” a segment he hosts on The P.O. Box Radio Show with Postman Dan. Independent artists cover classic Canadian songs for the broadcast, and in 2022 Ian started recording his own versions for the show.
Those recordings eventually became the Cancon Classics album in early 2024, earning on‑air praise from Sloan, Barenaked Ladies, and Prozzak. What began as radio content turned into a full creative outlet with its own identity.
Gran Fenwick's sound pulls from 90s alternative rock, punk roots, and guitar‑driven dance music, with a clear nod to the loud, swaggering energy of the Madchester era.
Each single highlights a different collaboration: “Armour Hill,” a textured 6/8 ballad featuring Jen Simpson of Neon Bloom; “Rarin 2 Go,” a sharp punk track built with Alexandra Hopkinson and Erika Christou of Jerkoff Diary; and “Suicide Sugar,” a darker alt‑rock cut marking the recording debut of Toronto performer Makinz after their pop‑up sets at the Bovine Sex Club. Every release feels like a snapshot of the artists involved at that moment.
Gran Fenwick continues to build out its catalog with the same approach — one songwriter at the core, surrounded by a shifting group of indie musicians who bring their own style and history into the mix. It's a project shaped by collaboration, radio roots, and the constant movement of Toronto's independent scene.
Gran Fenwick isn't locked into one lineup. It's Ian steering the ship, but the sound comes from all these different indie artists stepping in and adding their voice. That's the kind of community‑built music that keeps a scene alive.
