Oxford’s Unbelievable Truth have always been one of those rare bands who don’t chase the noise of the moment — they carve out their own quiet, emotionally sharp lane and let the songs do the talking.
Formed by Andy Yorke, Jason Moulster, and Nigel Powell, the trio arrived in the late‑90s just as Britpop was burning itself out, and they stood apart immediately. Their debut album ‘Almost Here’ (1998) wasn’t about swagger or volume — it was about intimacy, melody, and that unmistakable sense of honesty running through every track.
Songs like “Solved,” “Higher Than Reason,” and “Angel” showed a band who understood tension and release better than most: hushed verses, slow‑burn builds, and climaxes that hit without ever losing the core of what made them special. Critics picked up on the cohesion and sincerity, and the band built a loyal following at home and especially in Japan, where the record became a cult favorite.
Now, 28 years later, ‘Almost Here’ is finally getting the vinyl treatment it always deserved. Proper Records and Universal Music Recordings are reissuing the album on April 26th, with two formats:
- a faithful 180g black vinyl pressing replicating the original partially exposed inner sleeve
- a 2×180g gatefold edition featuring B‑sides and rarities — including the long‑loved “From This Height.”
The timing couldn’t be better. After years away, Unbelievable Truth reunited and released their third album ‘Rich Inner Life’ last year — earning strong praise (★★★★ Mojo, ★★★★ Record Collector) — and they’re already deep into work on album four. The chemistry is still there, the songwriting still sharp, and the band still carries that same quiet confidence that made their debut stand out in the first place.
‘Almost Here’ remains a focused, atmospheric record that rewards close listening — the sound of three musicians trusting mood, melody, and craft over trends. It’s a debut that hasn’t aged; it’s just finally getting the spotlight it earned.
Unbelievable Truth have that thing you can’t fake — songs built on honesty, space, and real emotional weight. They never chased the loudest room; they built their own atmosphere and let listeners come to them. Hearing these tracks again, especially with the vinyl reissue, you’re reminded how strong their songwriting always was. This is a band that still means what they play, and it shows.
